Ultrasound:

  • Affects the SMAS layer of tissue with ultrasound energy. The SMAS is fascia and skin below your facial and neck skin. By mobilizing this tissue, and tightening this layer, you will have a more natural and longer lasting result. This is the layer of tissue that sags with aging. A skin only face-lift, will not be long lasting, and is a much simpler procedure.
  • Ultrasound therapy has been proven safe through many years of clinical use as a form of imaging. Ultrasound energy passes through the skin and lands in deeper layers of tissue, which results in zero trauma to the epidermis.
  • Ultrasound guidance is essential to the success of ultrasound treatment, as it determines the precise depth of tissue into which ultrasound energy should be deposited.
  • This technology is designed to achieve profound results in one treatment. Most people notice dramatic results after 2 sessions or more.
  • Minimal side effects and downtime: Downtime is minimal. Swelling, bruising, flushing, and tenderness may fade gradually over a few weeks.
  • Sustained results: Results build over a few months and can last up to two years.

What is RF microneedling and PRP?

RF microneedling is a powerful combination of two modalities used together. Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that penetrates the uppermost layers of the skin provokes collagen proliferation. Microneedling or collagen induction therapy (CIT) can be used to minimize scarring and acne as well as optimize hair loss.  Microneedling can be combined with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is derived from the patient’s own blood and may contain growth factors that increase collagen production. It can be applied topically to the entire treatment area during and after collagen induction therapy treatments or injected intradermally to scars. PRP is also known as vampire facials.

The delivery of radiofrequency energy through tiny needles enhances the collagen-remodeling effects. Radiofrequency involves oscillation rate of an alternating electric current or voltage or of a magnetic, electric or electromagnetic field or mechanical system in the frequency[1] range from around 20 kHz to around 300 GHz.  This energy can stimulate collagen production and promotes skin tightening as well as reducing wrinkles and lines.

How well is RF microneedling vs ultrasound tolerated?

Generally, RF microneedling is considered more comfortable than ultrasound therapy. That said, an experienced provider has ways to mitigate the inherent discomfort of either treatment.

What are the side effects of RF microneedling?

RF microneedling downtime is minimal. Side effects like redness and tenderness may resolve in about a week.

How effective is RF microneedling?

While some degree of benefit is gained after one treatment, it usually takes a series of two to three sessions to achieve optimal skin-tightening effects.

RF microneedling may need to be performed more often as a touch-up treatment than ultrasound therapy.

The cost of RF microneedling may be less per session, but may be more overall depending on the number of sessions needed to correct tissue laxity.
